Stains

Stains can feel permanent -- they rarely are. Prompt, gentle treatment is key. Here are some handy home remedies. Always test an inconspicuous part of the garment to ensure the garment's colour doesn’t fade or change, begin by blotting, not rubbing.

COFFEE

Step 1

If the coffee stain is still fresh, immediately rinse the stain with cold water to make the stain lift from the fabric. Wipe clean once the stain lifts and allow to dry.

Step 2

Keep the stain wet and work in liquid laundry detergent and let it sit for 3-5 minutes. If the stain doesn’t disappear, repeat this procedure until the stain is gone. Rinse or wipe clean once the stain lifts.

PEN MARKS

Step 1

Lemon juice works best for felt pen, whereas ink and permanent markers might need nail polish remover. Squeeze some lemon juice on the stain and let it dry.

Step 2

Dab gently with a cloth, then work in cold water and a small amount of dishwashing liquid until it is completely gone.

Step 3

If the stain isn't gone by now, use nail polish remover on a cotton pad - carefully blot away the stain until it's completely gone. Rinse or wipe clean once the stain lifts.

OIL & FAT

Step 1

Apply dishwashing liquid directly to the stain and gently work it in. Then rinse the stained area in warm water and repeat the process, if the stain isn't gone.

Step 2

For stubborn marks, use a colour-safe stain remover before washing. Work the stain remover into the stain and let it sit for around 10 minutes. Don't rinse, but add liquid detergent into the stain remover on the stain. Let it sit for around 10 minutes. Then rinse the stained area in warm water and repeat the process, if the stain isn't gone.

Step 3

Avoid ironing or steaming until the stain is fully removed, this will only set the stain and make the continued removal of it harder.

KETCHUP

Step 1

Carefully scrape away excess sauce without pressing it into the fabric.

Step 2

Soak the stain in cold water. Apply some stain remover or liquid detergent on the stain and gently work it into the stain in circular motions Repeat until the stain fades, then wash as normal.

Step 3

In worst cases; use a mild colour safe, non-chlorine bleach only as a last resort, and never on wool. When you can’t see the stain any more, dry the garment or wash it as normal in the machine.

RED WINE

Step 1

Immediately soak up as much of the excess wine as possible with a towel or a cloth. Don’t rub the stain, only press.

Step 2

Pour salt on the stain and press on top of the salt to draw out remaining wine. After a while, brush away and rinse with cold water. The salt will absorb the wine and help to lift the stain. After a while, brush the salt away. Repeat if the strain isn't gone.

Step 3

For old or stubborn stains, soak the stain and carefully treat it with a mild colour safe, non-chlorine bleach. Except for wool. Then wash it as normal in the machine.

Sweat

No single treatment is best at removing sweat stains, because of the big differences between deodorant brands and detergents. Examine the type of stain to get an idea of how to remove it.

White stains

If the stain is white, hard, and/or brittle. treat the stain as soon as you notice it. Just rinse it under cold water for a while and then gently treat it with a colour safe, non-chlorine/bleach-free stain remover and wash it as normal.

Yellow stains

If the stains are yellow, create a paste out of three parts baking soda and one part water. Let the solvent work on the stain for up to one hour and rinse the garment or wash it as normal. Repeat until the stain lifts.

Don't bleach

Avoid bleach, even for white clothes. Bleach can actually react with the stain and make it even worse.

BLOOD

Step 1

If possible, immediately rinse the stain with cold water. Don't use hot water; hot water will set the stain.

Step 2

For persistent stains, follow with an extended soak in cold salt water and gently work in liquid detergent. Dab and dry or wash as normal.

Step 3

Dried stains may need a paste of baking soda, alternatively cornstarch or talcum powder and water. Leave to sit for at least 30 minutes, up to overnight before washing.
